Flying Dog

I've just bought a bottle of Doggie Style (jan 27/2011), here in Brazil. The code reads 223FX10. Is this bottle really out of date? When was this beer brewed and the "Best Before" ?

Thanks !!!

Hi Fernando,

We use a modified Julian Calendar to date our beers. It represents the day when the beer is not considered fresh. The first three numbers represent the day, the middle letters are an internal code, and the last two numbers are the year.

With that in mind, the Doggie Style you purchased went out of date on the 223rd day of 2010 -- August 11, 2010.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure how something like this would be handled in Brazil. What would recommend here in the States is for you to go back to the store where you bought it, explain that it's out of date, and see what they can do for you to compensate for that.

Regardless, we aim for every bottle of Flying Dog purchased to be in peak condition, even in other countries. I'm sorry the Doggie Style you purchased wasn't up to that standard.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Cheers!

Hi Erin,

I was unsure of the expiration date for this bottle because the import company (Getec Trading), which sells Flying Dog beers in Brazil, relabel all bottles with another expiration date. This particular bottle is relabeled with a expiration date for fev/23/2011. I guess they don't care much about the Flying Dog Brewery standards.

Hi Fernando,

Thanks for clarifying this for me.

Would it be possible for you to email me a photograph of the label and expiration date (Feb. 23, 2011) you referenced?

We are working with Getec on this and want to make sure we have all of the information we need. Thank you!

Cheers!

Sure Erin,

Here is a picture with the Doggie Style I wrote you about and a Snake Dog I purchased about four months ago.

The Getec label is the white sticker on the right side of the bottle. There you can read on the 4th text line the word "Validade" and a date (dd/mm/yy). "Validade" means expiration.

I'm very disapointed about all these. Getec Trading sells the american beers I love the most, but now I realize I've been drinking out of date beers for a while.

Please keep me posted about this issue. I can't wait to drink (fresh) Flying Dog beers again.

Cheers !!!

Hi Erin,

There is a rumor that Flying Dog beers will not be exported to Brazil anymore. I fell really bad about it and somehow responsable for playing a role in this situation. Although I dislike the way Getec is marketing Flying Dog beers here , makes me sad to think I might not be able to keep having my share of Double Dogs.

Being a fan of Dr. Hunter Thompson's writing, Ralph Steadman's art and craft beer, Flying Dog beers were a love at first sight for me. I still hope you guys at Flying Dog Brewery work out a way to keep pleasing all your fans here in Brazil.

Cheers,

Hi Fernando,

It came to our attention that fresh beer cannot be consistently delivered to our fans in Brazil due to Brazilian government regulations and transportation logistics. Due to some concerns about the quality of our beer in Brazil, we have discontinued shipments. It's unfortunate because we've received a lot of positive comments about our beer in Brazil. You should not feel personally responsible at all.

Cheers!
